Robert R Davila is the former deaf president of Gallaudet University – one of the world’s leading schools in education and career development for deaf and hard of hearing students. He attended Gallaudet University, where he gained an honours degree in 1953 and returned 54 years later as president. He retired at the end of 2009. Robert is a prolific speaker and author on deaf education and the empowerment of deaf people, and his teaching career has seen him working at elementary, high school and college levels. As assistant secretary at the US Department of Education, he was the government’s chief advisor on federal policy affecting education and vocational rehabilitation of the country’s 40 million people with disabilities.
