The chief resource in Signed Stories is the stories themselves – available for all schools and pre-school organisations to use online absolutely free.

Many teachers of deaf children have told us about the shortage of good educational resources accessible in BSL.

And this may be one reason why the educational attainment gap between deaf and hearing children is growing rather than narrowing at GCSE level.

We hope that the provision of the best of contemporary British children’s books – fully accessible in sound, sign, text and pictures or animation, will give teachers an additional interesting resource around which to build literacy and other lessons.

These Internet stories will be available to the parents and families of deaf children too, offering the opportunity to build homework projects around the stories in the broadband-enabled home.

And this website will refresh constantly, growing with additional books and additional resources to become, we hope, a free national repository of signed books online.

We have included a range of advice from teachers working both in mainstream and special schools where deaf children are learning.

Teacher comments appear on the endorsements page – demonstrating that this site can be used equally successfully for hearing children. Teachers from a Dunbar school explain how Signed Stories help to meet National Curriculum targets.

The panel below takes you to information about BATOD, the leading UK organisation meeting the needs of teachers of the deaf and those associated with deaf education.
