About sign language

All human beings use gestures for communication. Our body language and facial expression convey a wealth of meaning which helps others ‘interpret’ what we are saying.

Some experts believe that as much as 90 per cent of meaning is conveyed by non verbal-communication.

Deaf communities across the world use sign languages, but each has developed separately and each is a distinct language.

Deaf people from different countries often find it much easier to communicate effectively than hearing people do because the grammar of sign languages is often very similar.
